ready to end the day

With Black Friday coming to a close, contrasting images flood through my mind. Recalling the lavish decorations at the Peninsula Hotel, I rounded the corner and see a homeless man sleeping on the steps of a Church. In many ways, the Christmas Season juxtaposes our experiences in the same way Black Friday does.

We remember friends and family with greeting cards, but who hasn’t grumbled during shopping for people we don’t really see; but feel obliged to engage in reciprocal gift giving with. For many, the holidays are a reminder of friends and family we have lost, as much as they are a treasured celebration full of tradition to pass on to new generations. Some curse the crass commercialization of the holidays, other’s embrace gift buying as a way to make the season magical and full of surprises for the children in their lives.
My favorites of the day: Seeing kids and parents looking at the Macy’s Christmas Window display, drinking hot chocolate a Starbucks with my fellow shoppers, getting a free purse just for being one of the first shoppers at Women’s Express, encountering the Red Hot Mamas, taking a nap, and looking at all the Christmas decorations.
My not-so-favorites? Wondering if I would experience bodily injury as I interviewed those waiting at Circuit City at four-thirty am, getting scolded at Old Navy and the Gap for taking photos, the endless search for wireless internet, my cute cowboy boots that looked good but hurt my feet, and grouchy shoppers.
